Marriage- a transient concept

Marriage is basically union of couple decided to live together. Marriage broadly establishes inter-family relationships. It puts certain Moral obligations on partner's autonomy like restricted sexual orientation.
Marriage in Hindu family is considered as biggest festival because it occurs only once in lifetime. A lot of ceremonies are performed which proceeds like a journey from first meeting of families to last ceremony. Assembly of lots of people advocates the beautiful moments of the couple and gives blessings. Almost three generations of people enjoys the joyful events where children learn our culture from elders. Institution of marriage has changed significantly in last some decades in India  which are both productive and counterproductive.

Changes over the years in marriage are-
  1. Love marriages are gaining pace in India which is actually necessary in autonomy loving youth.
  2. New ceremonies like sangeet(music) inculcated due to Bollywood masala movies impact.
  3. Attendance have become more important than enjoying ceremonies.
  4. People started seeing marriage as events rather than sacred rituals.
  5. Event managers came up in place of cooperation in family members for managing marriage. People look to enjoy more than helping in management.
  6. People thinks it as time waste of 6-7 days now days, rather than taking it as mind refreshing period.
  7. People have forgotten meaning of vows(Christians), fera(Hindu)...
  8. Marriages became businesses in various terms like for caterers, even sometimes marriages fixed for corporate advantages.
  9. Destination weddings have changed the ancient meaning of the institution as lot of community people lived with you skips the marriage so ultimate aim of Hindu marriages missing.
  10. People wish for small attendance in marriage but thats not Indian culture. Vedas mention attendance binds the people together and put more responsibility on couple to carry on in life at adversity.
  11. Kanyadaan is most skeptical term. It is actually not played by father but by whole attending community.
  12. Child marriage proportion significantly decreased in India.
  13. Dowry system significantly decreased but still prevalent in many forms. In U.P, Bihar openly asked, in Rajasthan given as money and households things and in south as gold.
  14. Couple are becoming just permanent room partners.
My views on marriage are based on Gandhian ideology. Gandhi considered loyalty, truth and acceptance as main factors in marriage be it love or arrange marriage. On ancient cultural ceremonies I personally believe these are fundamental duty under article 51-A of constitution to value and preserve rich heritage of the country's composite culture. Rational following of culture is need of time , we should ask ourselves "why should we wear suits in tropical country like India?", "why marriage in private when we can have blessing of all?" Lastly growing plant by every couple like ceremonies need to be inculcated along with perpetual ceremonies, this would be our gift to coming generation.

  1. Hii,
I think your article gives a descriptive picture of what kind of marriages that you have attended. I totally agree and even I have witnessed such wedding rituals as well. But I think your views are quite limited to the way marriages happen in North Indian middle class families. I think India has a very rich cultural heritage and marriages are part of this which are not covered in main stream media. Various tribal cultures have a very different concept of marriage and as you have pointed out that it has evolved as well. But not all the people are evolving there is a huge chunk of people for whom it is very different. I would love to see that angle and your views on them as well. Also I have a problem with the definition of marriage. I think the couple is already United. Marriage is the celebration of their union. I don't know if that makes sense 😅. But anyway that's how I feel

    Thanku

    1. That is not my definition actually, Oxford dictionary defines in that way. Tribal marriages, LGBTQ marriages, transgender marriage etc. could be covered but that need research and I don't have proper details of that. I can't false content.

Untold incidents of Gandhi's life

'Bapu'(father) of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi was self made man. In the initial era of his life Gandhi had stage phobia and was unsuited for addressing public in conferences. He transformed himself and emerged as most influential public speaker. Gandhi moved the stairs of success by beating every obstacle in his path. In following incidents you will understand how Gandhi was different from other denizens. Incident-1  While he was in London, chairman of council advised him to address the public about his experiences behind founding this organisation. That night even after having speech written he was not able to deliver the speech in Vegetarian council. Gandhi had many universally accepted qualities since his childhood like truth, service for diseased family member, experimental mind etc. Incident-2 Once in his school external teachers  came for inspection. Gandhi wrote spelling of kettle wrong, his teacher pointed him to cheat from adjacent student but Gandhi didn't...

Dying Media

Freedom of press is insured under Article 19(1)(a) which deals with ‘Protection of certain rights regarding freedom of speech’ but is our press really free? The Land of Truth where newspapers like ‘Keshari’ of Lokmaniya Tilak, ‘Young India’ of Gandhi aroused the feelings of Nationalism and fought for the Plight of Farmers suffering from Fifty Four types of Taxes under British Raj. How could anyone believe that not even a single ‘Media House’ of such a country is in Top 500 TV channels of the world? Aren’t the journalism already dead in our country? Media is considered as fourth pillar of Democracy after Legislative, Executive and Judiciary. I am certain that it is a foreign concept because Television Media is just a puppetry show in India. In last year’s Media reports analysis it was mentioned that renowned News channels like Aajtak has broadcasted more than 6 debates on India vs Pakistan and Hindu-Muslim issues out of 10 debates which clearly propounds that they have concentrated them...
